Addiction Therapy

Quality care is of utmost importance when considering a treatment center. Rehabilitation is more than just detoxification and meeting attendance, it requires personalized attention from a skilled team of addiction specialists. These specialists should be able to set each individual up with the addiction therapy programs that will yield them the most benefit. Upon arriving at a facility, each patient’s unique situation should be thoroughly assessed and they will be placed in the appropriate addiction therapy programs.  These assessments are not only based on objectively measured criteria, but professional judgement as well. The overall objective is to place patients in addiction therapy programs that will provide them with safety and security, in addition to meeting treatment objectives.

Although there are varying types of addiction therapy programs, most rehabilitation centers include individual therapy as well as group therapy options. Family therapy programs and dual diagnosis treatment are also common forms of treatment, if the patient requires them. Medication and case management services should be available options as well. Before treatment begins an addiction counselor will help you make an informed decision as to which path to take on your road to recovery.

Individual Therapy

Regardless of the patient’s addiction background, they will undergo both individual and group therapy. Individual therapy enhances coping skills by navigating through high risk situations and giving addicts alternatives to handling them. These one on one meetings focus on a patients motivations to change their harmful behaviors and help them develop ways in which to shift their attitudes regarding their mental and physical well-being. Each patient will require a different approach during these individual therapy sessions, depending on what makes them feel most comfortable. A variety of styles are utilized in these sessions such as Motivational Enhancement Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Depending on the patient’s participation, these therapy programs are extremely valuable in the long-term success of the addict.

Group Therapy

Group therapy consists of meetings with other addicts that are facilitated by a primary therapist. This form of therapy is an important component to the recovery process because it allows patients the opportunity to relate and identify with others on their experiences with chemical dependency. This is an environment that encourages participants to speak openly and recognize that they are not alone in their struggle with addiction. Many people refuse treatment because they feel as though they are an outcast and meant to be alone in the fight. Most addicts make great strides towards a lifetime of sobriety once they understand that they have support from others. In this expressive and honest environment, patients receive more than feedback, they receive support for life. The relationships formed in these meetings can help facilitate growth in recovery for years to come.

Family Therapy

Substance abuse does not simply affect the family, it is a family addiction. Family members often enable addicts without realizing it; there is a fine line between helping and enabling. Professionally facilitated family therapy programs educate the family members about the illness and inform the addicts as to how their behavior negatively impacts those around them. The family approach to treatment often has higher success rates when combined with individual therapy than individual therapy on its own. An addict’s environment at home plays a large part in their ability to stay on the path to recovery and support at home is vital if they intend to stay clean.

Most treatment centers will include a multitude of options when it comes to therapy programs, both traditional and alternative. Yet, individual, group, and sometimes family sessions often come standard. After a full evaluation, each patient will be placed in a program with one main goal in mind, a life abstaining from substance abuse and promoting overall happiness.
