SMART Recovery

Addiction recovery is a life-long process, one that requires careful maintenance and serious dedication. It is not uncommon for a recovering addict to fall back into old ways if they do not remain mindful during the whole recovery process. Even after years of sobriety, people have been known to fall back into the grasp of substance abuse once again, anyone in recovery can fall victim to their cravings. SMART Recovery is a relatively new addiction treatment program that can greatly reduce the rate of relapse. The SMART Recovery program takes a scientific, non-confrontational, motivational, and logical method to maintaining sobriety long-term.

Those who engage in the SMART Recovery program will find themselves in a highly supportive environment, as they learn an approach to recovery that comes from evidence-based research. This “Self-Management and Recovery Training” program is based on the idea that recovery is constantly evolving and the process of treatment must evolve with it. SMART recovery grows with each patient, as they gather more knowledge and confidence, they gain headway.

SMART Recovery Tools

SMART Recovery is a 4-point program. It empowers and supports patients by facilitating their growth through self-management skills that are personalized towards each individual. These skills are used to help recovering addicts maintain not only long term sobriety, but steer clear of many forms of addictive behaviors. Examples of these behaviors could include drug use, alcohol abuse, eating disorders, gambling, internet addiction, and sexual addictions etc. This program is constantly evolving based on the latest scientific research and factors both within and outside of the rehab community. The 4-points in the SMART recovery program include:

  • Building and encouraging motivation
  • Finding ways in which to cope with cravings and urges
  • Management of emotions, thoughts, and behaviors
  • Living an overall balanced lifestyle

Each tool helps patients progress towards the final point of the program, yet it cannot be achieved without the practice of the points preceding it. SMART recovery meetings should consist of face-to-face interactions, as well as in-depth discussions. These discussions should relate to the various ways that the tools learned in the program can be applied in a practical manner. Some of the tools included in these discussions may include:

  • Role-playing
  • The ABCs of Rational Emotive Behavior (REBT)
  • REBT for Urge Coping
  • REBT for Emotional Upsets
  • The Hierarchy of Values
  • The Stages of Change
  • A Hierarchy of Values
  • Change Plan Worksheet
  • Cost/Benefit Analysis
  • Destructive Imagery and Self-Talk Attentiveness and Refusal Method
  • Absolute Self-Acceptance

SMART recovery programs have been thought of as an alternative for more spiritually based programs. These sessions’ help addicts find independence from their addictions through a treatment method based on scientific knowledge. Although this option of treatment may differ from approaches such as 12-step programs, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and other spiritually centered self-empowerment groups/programs, they are not entirely excluded. SMART recovery programs are based around the idea that each individual can help themselves on constructing their own path to recovery. Get professional help constructing this path and discover that achieving a balanced lifestyle is possible though self-management practice and recovery training.
